Presentation, Live Animal Exhibit, and Vernal Pool Exploration
🌿 Ever wonder what makes those “BLEEP-BLEEP-BLEEP” and “CHIRP-CHIRP-CHIRP” sounds in the Woods? On warm, rainy spring days, the forest comes alive with mysterious calls. Are they birds? Bugs? Frogs? Something else entirely?
Come find out at a free, family-friendly exploration of vernal ponds and the amazing creatures that depend on them. Vernal ponds are temporary, fishless wetlands that fill with rainfall and snow melt. They’re essential breeding grounds for amphibians and other species and they can be found right here in Swampscott!
🎥 The Adventure Begins Indoors
We’ll kick things off with Vernal Ponds, a 15‑minute film created by the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team and shot entirely on Cape Ann. The video offers a fascinating introduction to vernal pond ecology and the hidden world these temporary wetlands support.
🐸 Meet the Experts (and the Wildlife!)
Rick Roth from the Cape Ann Vernal Pond Team will share why vernal pond certification and protection matter, answer your questions, and introduce you to a few live frogs, salamanders, and other critters up close.
🌲 Then We Head Into the Woods
After the indoor program, we’ll venture outside together for a guided walk to a certified vernal pool in the woods surrounding the church. Experience firsthand the sights and sounds of these seasonal habitats and the wildlife that rely on them.
