Coming of Age

Our Coming of Age for teens is a program that helps our youth in their journey toward young adulthood. Our youth start the process of deeply understanding what they have been learning about Unitarian Universalism in a more structured and committed way. Coming of Age is a faith journey. Every youth is paired with a mentor who helps guide them throughout the year. Lessons are planned around faith, exploring God concepts, good and evil, why bad things happen to good people, and life and death. The youth become involved in a service project, develop an elevator speech about what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist, and write a faith statement. Each youth reads their faith statement during a Celebration of Coming of Age in the spring.

Child Dedications
Our ceremony to welcome children into the world is a celebration of the child and an expression of gratitude for the new life that has come to us.

We dedicate babies and children of church members on Sunday mornings within the context of congregational worship so that the congregation may make promises to the child and their parents, and welcome the child into our covenant. We bless the child with the water that has been gathered in during our annual Water Communion, using the scallop shell — ancient symbol of pilgrimage — to pour the water onto the child’s head in the traditional gesture. We do not believe in original sin, but in original blessing. Therefore, our use of the water is not to purify the child from sin but to make a gesture that spiritually connects the child’s spirit with the grandeur of God’s creation.

The Minister may be available to do private christenings for non-members and is happy to receive your inquiries about setting up this joyful rite of passage.

New Member Recognition
Persons who become members of the church are invited to participate in a Welcoming Ceremony. Each new member is introduced to the congregation, exchanges an affirmation of welcome and commitment, and receives the Right Hand of Fellowship from a member of the Board of Trustees, the Parish Minister and the Director of Faith Development.
