OUR PARTNER CHURCH

Since 2004, UUCGL has had a partnership with the Unitarian congregation in the village of Homoródkeményfalva, which is in the Transylvania region of Romania. Once a part of Hungary, Transylvania includes many villages that reflect Hungarian ethnicity.

Prior to 2004, two UUCGL youths participated in a youth pilgrimage to Unitarian and other Transylvanian sites and visited Homoródkeményfalva. In the years since 2004, ten more representatives from our UUCGL congregation have also visited Kemenyfalva where they stayed in village homes and gained a first-hand understanding of the roots of the Unitarian religion and how a people have been able to withstand years of attacks on their beliefs and organized efforts to suppress their Hungarian identity.

Our congregation has provided some assistance to the Homoródkeményfalva congregation and the village in meeting needs that our partner has identified. Some of these projects have been: scholarships for village youth to attend high school, technical institute, and/or university; support of a summer camp for children of Kemenyfalva and other nearby villages in collaboration with two other UU congregations; subsidizing the costs of rehabilitating the parish house; and facilitating visits both to and from our two congregations.

Below are some photos taken by members of our church who have visited over the years (click on a photo to enlarge it):
