We have heard that "to understand all is to forgive all," but perhaps that is too easy a cliche for our social predicament right now. What does it mean to maintain compassion with those who stubbornly refuse to act for the common good? What are the limits of compassion? How do we approach and practice it without becoming moral pudding?
