Worship

A basic goal of our worship is to heighten awareness of, and rekindle our commitment to, that which each considers Ultimate. More specifically, we gather to celebrate and learn, to find guidance and courage for the work of peace and justice, and to practice being conscious of the sacred in the ordinary.

Though our congregation has its deepest theological roots in the Judeo-Christian tradition, our worship embraces all humanity and affirms all religions of good will. Welcomed among us are those who affirm human capacity and responsibility without reference to deity; those whose ground of inspiration is earth-centered/goddess traditions; those inspired by Eastern religions; and those who revere undefined goodness; as well as those who love and trust one God, and all who bring their questions.

All who speak, sing, and pray express their minds and hearts and offer what is always a partial sense of the values, theology, style, and vision of this congregation. In our worship, you will sometimes hear and experience your truth; sometimes another’s. The truth of each is considered respectfully. The truth of none is assumed or imposed.

During worship, you will hear the language of faith, but you may also hear the language of history and science. It is important to remember that the language of worship is different from the language of history or science. When the language of religion is used, it is best understood as metaphor or poetry. Like the language of music and art, religious language invites multiple interpretations and eludes singular definition. If religious language is to be taken seriously, it cannot be taken literally. It is the language of faith, hope, and love.

Welcome to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greater Lynn, where faith and reason meet. May our worship evoke awareness of Ultimacy and facilitate personal, social, and environmental harmony.
