For several years UUCGL has provided assistance to the Essex County Community Organization (ECCO), an interfaith community activist organization in Lynn. In recent years ECCO has expanded its membership to include local unions and other community organizations and has become active in communities from Lynn to Gloucester.
In house meetings throughout Lynn, achievable goals are set for projects to benefit the community, such as working to have community policing implemented in Lynn, to make after-school programs available to students, and with the public library to have the branch libraries reopened.
ECCO has also worked for a commitment from local banks to fund a low-interest, first-time home buyers program. In an effort to promote jobs that pay a living wage, ECCO has worked with machine shop owners, a local trade organization, and city and state officials, including school administration, to organize and implement a machinist training program, which has been a tremendous success.
UUCGL also supports ECCO with an annual financial commitment.
