Handbell Ringing Group

There is a long history of handbell ringing at UUCGL. Under the direction of Katherine P. Loring, a group called the Chapel Chimers was very active both within and outside of the church. In the past decade, the bells have been used less regularly, although one of the three octaves of bells has been completely refurbished.

Special projects, sometimes prepared by an intergenerational bell choir, have involved handbell ringers of all ages for certain Sunday morning worship services.

In January 2010, a new handbell group was formed through the initiative of a parishioner. Consisting partially of nonparishioners, the group sets out Thursday rehearsals on dates to which all group members can commit. There was a very successful appearance by the new handbell group on May 31st.

Handbells are a great way for people to make music with others. They are especially appealing to those who love music but may not be comfortable or available for singing in one of the choirs. In addition, the Handbell Ringing Group provides a way for its members to make an artistic contribution to a service of worship. Membership is always open, and commitments will be worked out based on the schedules of all participants.
