Adult Programs for Religious Growth

Philosophy

We believe that the spiritual journey is a lifelong process. Throughout our years we continue to explore deep questions, to struggle with ethical challenges, and to grow in wisdom, compassion, generosity, and faith. The answers of our youth may no longer serve us in our mature years. The challenges of our contemporary society are ever new and changing. Boundaries of knowledge and of inspiration are ever expanding.

We continue to grow by drawing on the wisdom of the ages, the inner spark of our own spirit, and thoughtful conversation with others.

Programs for Adults

These programs vary from year to year, but usually include the following

  • Courses led by the parish minister introduce participants to the wisdom of the world’s religions and application of this wisdom to daily living; and assist in the development of a spiritual practice and of one’s personal theology
  • Small gatherings for meditation or spiritual centering
  • Book discussion groups
  • Groups for parent education and/or support
  • Speakers and films relating to current social issues
  •

These programs may be led by the minister of religious education, other members of the staff, members of the congregation, or invited guests.

Covenant Groups

Covenant Groups are ongoing. These groups of six to ten members meet twice a month for simple ritual and conversation about a spiritual theme, drawing from their own life experience. The groups are open and always ready to welcome new members.

Learning by Teaching

A particularly rich resource for religious growth is the opportunity to teach or to lead in some other fashion. In doing so one learns not only about the topic at hand, but also about oneself and about others. By teaching a children’s class, working with a group of teens, leading an adult program or some other congregational group, one’s own spirituality is stretched and deepened.
